Is there anything more irritating than an allergic reaction? Well, if you’re allergic to your favorite animal, that is even more frustrating. Cats produce a Fel d1, a sticky protein that 30% of Americans are allergic to. If you’re allergic to cats or someone you know is allergic to cats, getting a hypoallergenic cat breed might be a good solution. Mind you, there are no genuinely hypoallergenic cats. However, some breeds produce less of this protein, and their coat sheds less, meaning we might not get an allergic reaction. Here is a list of our 10 favorite hypoallergenic cats.

1. Devon Rex

The Devon Rex is a curly-coated cat breed. A curly coat means the loose hair will not fly all over your home and cause allergic reactions. This breed’s loose hair will stay firmly tangled in its coat until you brush it out. Plus, these cats shed less than some other breeds. The Devon Rex is a reasonably energetic cat that makes an excellent family companion. Make sure you provide your hypoallergenic cat with plenty of activity, and you will have a perfect family pet.

2. Balinese

It can seem pretty weird that a longhaired breed like the Balinese can be considered hypoallergenic, but it’s true. These cats shed, but they produce less Fel d1 protein. That makes them somewhat hypoallergenic. Plus, the Balinese’s soft coat makes them outstanding cuddling partners. Their coat is soft, fluffy, and especially warm during those cold winter nights.

3. Siberian

The Siberian is the second thick-coated breed we included. These cats evolved in Russia, which has a freezing climate. They needed a thick coat that would insulate them. However, despite their thick coats, the Siberian is considered hypoallergenic. Like the Balinese, these cats produce less Fel d1 protein that causes an allergic reaction. Plus, the Siberian is an absolutely gorgeous-looking cat.

4. Sphynx

It should be pretty clear why the amazing Sphynx is on this list - it has no coat. No coat means no shedding. That makes allergic reactions to cat hair nearly impossible. However, these cats still produce allergy-causing protein, so they are not truly hypoallergenic. Nevertheless, many Sphynx owners reported having fewer or even no allergic reactions to them.

5. Peterbald

The Peterbald is another coatless cat breed that earned a spot on the best hypoallergenic cat breeds list. These cats have a “hair-losing” gene, which causes them to lose most of their coat. Again, no coat makes allergic reactions to cat hair less likely. That makes the Peterbald a fantastic choice for all those with mild cat allergies but want to get a cat. Plus, you will get a great-looking exotic cat companion.

6. Cornish Rex

The Cornish Rex, like the Devon Rex, is a curly-coated breed. That means the loose hair remains in the cat’s coat until it’s groomed out. A great thing about cats is that they take care of their grooming themselves. Nevertheless, your Cornish Rex will need regular brushing that will make sure its coat remains in perfect shape. These cats are playful and form strong bonds with their family members.

7. Ocicat

Even if you’re not a cat person, you can’t deny the fabulous look the Ocicat possesses. These cats look like wild felines. However, that is very far from the truth. The Ocicat was created from the Siamese and Abyssinian breeds, which gave them fantastic looks and mild tempers. They are active, though, so you will need to engage your Ocicat’s body and mind.

8. Russian Blue

The Russian Blue is a gorgeous but rare cat breed. These cats are muscular, active, and fantastic hunters. They are a naturally-occurring cat breed, which means a lot of its history is unknown. Luckily, they are considered hypoallergenic because they are pretty detailed in their grooming efforts. Regular brushing will keep the shedding and allergens to a minimum, making it somewhat suitable for mild allergy sufferers.

9. Siamese

The Siamese is probably one of the most famous cat breeds in the world. These cats were used for creating countless other cat breeds. They are absolutely stunning and can be described as hypoallergenic! The Siamese produces less Fel d1 protein, which causes fewer allergy reactions. They are excellent family companions that will adapt to most living conditions.

10. Oriental Shorthair

If you have cat allergies and you love exotic-looking cats, the Oriental Shorthair might be the right choice for you! These cats are absolutely stunning with their unique features and adorable ears. They are related to the Siamese, so the “hypoallergenic” trait isn’t that surprising. If you decide to get yourself an Oriental Shorthair, you will get a cat that looks like Egyptian pharaohs would have kept by their side.
