As a cat owner, you must understand that there will be some situations in your cat's life where she will experience certain health problems. The most common symptoms of different health issues are vomiting and nausea.

Undoubtfully your cat will experience vomiting or nausea at least once in their lifetime, and if you want to help your cat battle this, there are ways to help. Vomiting and nausea will, in most cases, cause decreased appetite for cats, and most cat owners will, in this situation, realize that something is wrong.

This is where Cerenia comes into play. Sometimes, your vet could prescribe your cat Cerenia to stop vomiting and nausea, no matter what caused them.

What is Cerenia for cats?

Cerenia is an antiemetic med used to stop vomiting and nausea in cats. It can be administered to cats that are older than 16 weeks.

It is interesting how these meds work. After your cat receives Cerenia, the med will start working and immediately head to the cat's brain and stop the neurochemical signal responsible for vomiting. In no time, your cat will not vomit anymore.

GOOD TO KNOW: Most common usage of Cerenia is for motion sicknesses, and it can last up to 24 hours.

When is Cerenia used?

There could be many different situations where your vet will prescribe your cat Cerenia to prevent vomiting or nausea.

Some of them include

  • Motion sickness
  • During surgical procedures
  • To prevent vomiting in cats diagnosed with renal failure
  • To treat dermatitis, since Cerenia can prevent itchiness

IMPORTANT: You should never medicate your cat on your own and should always talk to your vet about all the possible treatment options. If you administer Cerenia to your cat without your vet's approval, you can cause even more problems.

How can Cerenia be administered?

Depending on your cat, your vet could prescribe different types of Cerenia to give to your cat. The most common one is injection form, but your vet could also prescribe your cat tablets.

1. Cerenia injection for cats

Cerenia in the injection is the most commonly used type, and the correct dosage is 1mg/1 lb of cat weight. This injection can be administered to cats for no more than 5 days daily. The most common side effect of this type is a little pain in the area where the injection was administered.

2. Cerenia tablets for cats

When it comes to Cerenia tables, there are some things you will have to understand first. There are no Cerenia tablets specially designed for cats. They are used for dogs, but some vets could prescribe these tablets for cat usage in some specific cases. Because of this, you shouldn't medicate your cat on your own and you should always listen to your vet.

Cerenia for Cats Side Effects

As with any meds, Cerenia could also bring some side effects after usage, although they are extremely rare. The most common side effect when it comes to Cerenia injection is pain at the spot of injection. Usually, this pain will quickly disappear, and your cat will not need additional treatment.

There are some other mentioned side effects, but they are listed for precaution. They include:

  • Anorexia
  • Lethargy
  • Fever
  • Dehydration
  • Hematuria (blood in the urine)
  • Excessive drooling

These mentioned side effects can only appear in less than 1% of cats, but you must know them in order to help your cat.

IMPORTANT: It is advised not to use Cerenia in pregnant and lactating cats since there have been no studies for these cases. Also, Cerenia should not be used in kittens younger than 16 weeks.
