Breed History

The Havana Brown breed doesn’t actually come from Cuba. These cats are descendants of the brown Siamese. Historical evidence shows that brown Siamese was exhibited in England in the 1890s. Still, cat breeders and owners of that time didn’t really appreciate or approve of them. They were initially called “Swiss Mountain Cats,” Unfortunately, they disappeared after World War II.

In the 1920s, British cat breeders wanted to produce a solid brown cat. After a few failed experiments, they managed to produce a brown male kitten. They crossed a black domestic shorthaired cat, and a seal pointed Siamese. They used that brown male kitten as the foundation for the breed we now know as Havana Brown.

Some breeders believe that the Russian Blue and the Burmese helped with this breed’s development. They were internationally recognized in 1964. These cats were exported to the US in the 1950s, and American cat breeders developed them differently than their British counterparts. That is why in the US, these cats are registered as Havana Brown, and in Europe, they are considered a part of the Oriental cat breed.

General Health

The Havana Brown cat breed’s most dominant characteristic is its unique coat. However, other unique characteristics make these cats so amazing. They are well-balanced, fairly muscular, with an unusual head shape, brown whiskers, and green eyes. Here are other crucial characteristics.

Coat

The coat of the Havana Brown breed is impressive. These cats have short, smooth coats that you’ll enjoy petting. They rarely need a bath and brushing them once a week is more than enough.

Havana Brown

Coat color

This breed’s coat color is what really makes them so special. These cats have a deep, rich, brown-reddish color that reminds of a Cuban cigar (which is how the breed got its name). Kittens can be born with tabby markings, but most lose them as they develop.

Size

Havana Brown cats are considered medium-sized. Most adult cats weigh 6 - 10 pounds and reach a length of 12 - 15 inches.

Temperament

Since these cats are most likely a mixture of the Siamese, the Russian Blue, and the Burmese, you can expect them to have a mixture of all those temperaments. The good news is that Havana Brown cats got all the good temperament traits from their ancestors. These cats are friendly, love humans, talkative, and can be demanding at times. You have to be prepared to share your home with such a cat. Once you know what to expect of them, you will get a fantastic companion that will be your best friend.

Health

Even the best-laid plans and breeding programs can’t completely eradicate potential health issues a breed can have. These cats are generally considered healthy, but like all other cat breeds, they can be prone to specific issues. Luckily, there is only one major concern, and it is the infection of the upper respiratory system.
