Cymric

There are many special cat breeds in this world, and one of our definite favorites is the Cymric. There is some controversy when it comes to these cats. Some registries believe it is a longhaired version of the Manx. Those registries even call it the longhaired Manx. We love the Celtic name Cymric, even though the cat has no affiliation with Wales. Canada claims they are responsible for the breed’s development, and the situation is still not entirely clear. Here’s what you should know about this interesting tailless cat.

The thing that sets these cats apart from the Manx breed and all other breeds is their characteristics. The dominant trait is the lack of the tail, but that is not unique to this breed. Here are the main characteristics future owners and Cymric lovers should be aware of.

Coat

As we briefly mentioned, the Cymric has a long coat. That is the main difference between them and the Manx breed. These cats have a double coat that becomes longer as it reaches the cat’s rear end. It can be challenging to groom, but brushing is necessary to keep the coat healthy and look its best.

Coat color

The Cymric comes in all sorts of attractive colors and patterns. Some of the great patterns are calico, tortoiseshell, as well as tabbies, and various solid colors. However, some colors, like chocolate, lavender, and the pointed Himalayan pattern, are not allowed in the breed.

Size

Another thing these cats share with the Minx is the size. These cats are considered medium-sized. Adult cats are usually between 8 - 12 pounds. The length of the cat isn’t defined in its standard.

Temperament

Another critical aspect of a cat breed is its temperament. This is a massive plus with pureblooded breeds - we know what type of temperament we can expect. The Cymric is an affectionate cat. Some cats choose one person while others are affectionate towards an entire family. They are even fairly tolerable towards kids. They are very peaceful and often seem like nothing in the world can bother them. They are fun to have around your home.

Health

No matter what breed you have at home, there are specific health issues that can affect them. The Cymric is generally a healthy breed with an 8 - 14 years life expectancy. However, they are still prone to certain health issues. Some of those health concerns are;

  • Arthritis - This is especially worrying in cats with partial tails because it can affect that part.
  • Manx syndrome - This actually refers to different birth defects like bowel or urinary tract issues and a spine that is too short. These issues become apparent when the kitten reaches 4 months. That is why two tailless Cyrmic shouldn’t be bred together.
  • Corneal dystrophy - A cloudiness of the eyes, which becomes apparent when the kitten is 4 months old.
